| Northwind (icebreaker) | The veteran Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind, stationed on Puget Sound since her commissioning in 1945, was sent to the Coast Guard's Curtis Bay, Maryland shipyard for major renovations lasting for over two years and costing more than $7 million. Machinery was modernized, living spaces brought up to current standards, a pollution abatement system installed and a new, more efficient bow section added. Upon completion her hull was repainted, a more practical red color replacing the traditional Coast Guard white for better visibility in ice. Gordon Newell, Maritime Events of 1973, H. W. McCurdy Marine History of the Pacific Northwest 1966 to 1975., p.144-5. |
