Many local libraries have genealogical books. There are several good books that describe genealogy in general or genealogy in the United States that is not specific to any immigrant group. If there is a Mormon Family History Library near you, they will have books and other materials and volunteers who may answer questions. You can search for genealogically oriented newsgroups or mailing lists and ask questions "on line". There are genealogical societies, magazines and genealogical interest groups that meet on a regular basis to discuss genealogy. From time to time, genealogical seminars are held where you can listen to lectures and ask questions.
