Someone or some group maintains "mailing list" software on a computer. The "mailing list" is given a generic address, like pie@jsoft.com. Potential mailing list subscribers are given instructions on how to send the mailing list software a message that will cause the software to record the sender's e-mail address and thus "subscribe" the sender to the mailing list. All subscribers may then send messages to the generic e-mail address (pie@jsoft.com) and the mailing list software will send each e-mail message out to all the subscribers. Every e-mail message sent to the mailing list software is automatically sent out to all the mailing list subscribers.
