B8: What resources will help me find towns in Italy and their postal
codes?
The "Annuario generale, comuni e frazioni d'Italia". 1993
Milano: Touring Club Italiano, 1968 and published every 5 years thereafter.
The book claims to list EVERY town in Italy, even those that are no longer
populated. So far, I have been able to locate- given the right place name-every
town asked about, including places with populations of less than 100 persons. The
information given includes:
- 1. Province or commune if the place is a hamlet of a larger town.
- 2. Distant from provincial capitol or commune.
- 3. Physical size of town
- 4. Population of the and surrounding area
- 5. Oftimes some geographical info, " a mountain community located
at 1213 m in the Fontanabuona..."
- 6. Postal code and telephone prefix
- 7. Location of nearest train station, hospital, police station, school,
finance office, bishop's office.8
- 8. Information about festivals and market days.
- 9. 'Tourist' info such as museums, tennis courts, etc.The larger the
city, the more information is included. There are brief histories of each
Province, usually 5 to 6 paragraphs.More extensive information is included
for Provincial capitols including street addresses for all government offices
and agencies and the office of the bishop and/or "Mother Church".The
material, although in the Italian language, is fairly easy to understand.
The information about an individual town is given in a form similar to
that of the AAA guides in the US.Symbols are used to designate postal code,
telephone prefix, train station, airport market days, festivals, etc. so
that it is not necessary to know or remember the Italian terms for these
things. The material includes references to a set of maps in the book that
locate many of the towns. These maps are agin similar to AAA road maps and
include highway designations, driving distances, geographic features, etc.
Using the World Wide Web (WWW) you can find a postal code in Italy
by pointing your browser to: http://www.crs4.it/~france/CAP/icap.html
Enter the name of the town that you want in the box labeled "Richiesta:",
and press the "Cerca" button. You will get the following display:
