1200 (circa) Present day extreme uppermost northern border areas of Abruzzo region belonged to the Papal States (ruled by the Pope) but most of present day Abruzzo and Molise belonged to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (a personal possession of the Holy Roman Emperor).
1500's Today's extreme uppermost northern border areas of Abruzzo region were part of the Papal States in the 1500's

1500's Most of what we know today as Abruzzo and Molise was part of the kingdom of Naples in the 1500's. The weakening of the city-states caused Naples to be lost to Spanish rule at that time.

1860 Papal States joined the Kingdom of Sardinia. The uppermost part of today's northern area of the Abruzzo region was part of the Papal States in 1860.

1860 The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies joined the Kingdom of Sardinia. Most of present day Abruzzo and Molise was part of The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in 1860.
